What Is a Word Scramble?

At its most fundamental level, a word scramble consists of rearranging a set of letters to form a real word. For example, if you have the letters ERHE, you can unjumble those letters to make the word “HERE.” For more of a challenge, you might work on unscrambling RLAIDSZ into “LIZARDS.” A word scramble cheat can help with tougher challenges.

Jumble: The First Scrambled Word Game

Word scrambles have been around for decades. In fact, they’re even older than word search puzzles! Comic book writer and artist Martin Naydel created one of the first word scrambles in 1954. It originally appeared as “Scramble” before it was retitled as “Jumble.”

In his version, you’re given four sets of jumbled letters to unscramble. Two sets have five letters, and the other two have six letters. Within each of these words, some letters are circled. You then unscramble the circled letters to form a surprise answer to a question posed in the accompanying cartoon. Today, the syndicated version of the game is called “Jumble -- That Scrambled Word Game.”

While both Martin Naydel and Martin Nodell worked as comic book artists around the same time, including at DC Comics, they are not the same person.

Naydel worked on Jumble until about 1962. After that, syndicate art director Henri Arnold and partner Bob Lee took over as word scramble maker for at least the next 30 years. The series was later maintained by cartoonist Jeff Knurek and puzzle maker David L. Hoyt.
