Four letter words serve as the bread and butter of many popular word games. Cool 4 letter words land in that beautiful Goldilocks zone with big scoring potential, even when the game board is looking a little tight. It’s advantageous to keep a 4 letter word finder in your corner at all times. That way, you can quickly tap into that potential in Words With Friends® and Scrabble®. Small words can mean big points.

For much the same reason, carefully study our list of 5 letter words too. You can’t score a bingo bonus on every turn, but you can rack up lots of points with clever play throughout your game.

High Scoring 4 Letter Words

Paraphrasing from a certain popular playwright, though they be but little, four letter words are fierce! When you include a high-value letter -- like J, Q or Z -- these words can be worth a lot of points, especially if you land on some bonus squares. Looking for 4 letter words using these letters is easier than you might think.

4 Letter Words with J

A great strategy for maximizing your scoring potential is to hook a J onto an O to play JO. Along with 4 letter words with J, you effectively get credit for playing that J tile in two words at the same time.

Some excellent options here include JEUX, meaning a game, and JINX, meaning to bring bad luck. Both of these words add in the high-value X tile for good measure. Similarly, the letter K is also relatively high value. So, words like JACK, JOCK, and JUKE are great to play too.

4 Letter Words with Q

If you’ve been playing these word games for a while, you probably already know about QI. Just like with JO, double up on that Q by playing 4 letter words with Q when the chance arises.

Words that start with Q are the most common here, including QUAY, QUAD and QADI. By comparison, 4 letter words ending in Q are exceedingly rare. You’ve got CINQ or SEQQ, the latter of which will need a blank to serve as the second Q.

4 Letter Words with Z

Like JO and QI, there’s also ZA to play off, a shorthand slang term for pizza. Grab a slice and savor a list of 4 letter words with Z. Be sure to save letters like Q and Z for bonus potential if you can, but don’t back yourself into a corner for the endgame either. If you’ve got the chance to play a word like JEEZ, you should probably take it.

High potential Z words with 4 letters include COZY and CHEZ, since C is generally hard to play otherwise. If you need 4 letter words that start with Z, then ZIGS, ZAGS and ZAPS are probably near the top of your list. If you’d rather save that S, then you might play ZEBU, ZEAL, ZINE or ZOUK instead.

Popular 4 Letter Words

As satisfying as it may feel to play words for lots of points, sometimes you just need to play a word to get some fresh tiles. Basic 4 letter words like HAVE are handy for getting rid of a difficult V in your rack, for example.

Have a lot of vowels and need some consonants? Consider playing 4 letter words starting with A like AAHS, AERO, ALAE and ALOE. While they’re not worth a lot of points, they could set the stage for bigger moves later on. The more you unscramble 4 letter words, the more consistent your overall play will become.
