1942 - The First New York Times Crossword Is Published

Although staff had been trying to get the New York Times to publish a crossword puzzle for a couple of decades, it was a major national event that prompted the paper to dive into the world of word games. After the US entered World War II, the editors decided Americans needed a diversion. You can still play that first puzzle today!

1950 - The New York Times Crossword Becomes a Daily Feature

When the New York Times first started making the crossword, it was for the Sunday edition. In 1950, the NY Times daily crossword made an appearance, and puzzle enthusiasts have delighted ever since.

The current NYT Crossword editor is Will Shortz, who founded the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in 1978 and the World Puzzle Championship in 1992. He has edited more than 10,000 puzzles for the New York Times.

2014 - NYT Spelling Bee Debuts

Spelling Bee, the NYT Game about making words out of letters in a hexagonal grid, debuted in print form in 2014 in The New York Times Magazine. By 2018, it was online too - with new daily puzzles. Since then, it’s only grown in popularity.

2022 - Wordle Joins the New York Times Games

In 2022, a new puzzle joined the daily crossword to the delight of game enthusiasts. The New York Times purchased Wordle, which had been developed by Josh Wardle the previous year. It was an instant hit, bringing in millions of new Wordle players. By 2023, Wordle had been played more than 4.8 billion times in that year alone. It’s the most popular game the NYT publishes.

2023 - NY Times Connections Joins the Fun

2024 - The New York Times Adds Strands

Strands joined the other great puzzles from the NYT in 2024, starting first as a beta-tested version users could try out. With its grid of letters, this game is a variation of a word search, but it includes “spangrams,” which sum up the words in the grid. It’s a fun new addition that everyone loves.
